When she’s not training to become an Iyenga Yoga Instructor or trying to become the female Bear Grylls, Heike Meyburgh works as a Digital Strategist for Cerebra. After graduating from UJ with a BA (Hons) in Corporate Communications and before joining Cerebra, Heike worked at several agencies engaging with big brands such as Nike, Cell C and RedBull. Heike’s current clients include Toyota and Nedbank and one of her biggest achievements to date was winning Bookmark Awards in 2011 and 2012 on behalf of her clients, Samsung and Toyota.

The Account Manager becomes a Conductor

In a previous post I shared my revelation on how an agency is similar to an orchestra. This is still very relevant, but I felt the need to dissect and delve into the role of an account manager more.

Account Managers. Client Services. Slave Drivers. These are all terms associated with those that sit in meetings for hours on end, write briefs, shout if deadlines aren’t met, and slay emails amongst various other tasks that they do. But seriously though, what do account managers actually do?

The Social Media Orchestra

Recently (a fellow Cerebran) and myself visited the Johannesburg Philharmonic Orchestra as a team building exercise. While listening to the music I started thinking how Cerebra is like an orchestra.

Do we know our consumers?

We all fall prey to this; we assume to know exactly who our consumers are, what they like doing, where they go, what they watch, and how they think. But do we really?

Let’s turn the tables; the chances are that you are a target demographic in someone’s marketing plan, so what would they say about you?

“Young professional, female, suburban, no children, reads magazines X, Y and Z, listens to radio stations A and B, watches these shows in these timeslots…”

Is this who I am? Can I be pigeonholed like this? I feel offended that my entire being has been determined by general metrics and observations. I don’t question the reasons why we have them, but rather arguing the fact that this mindset doesn’t necessarily apply to social.
